Amber's Abode

Wipe that smirk off your face!

There is a lot to say this time, but not many words feel like coming out.

I went to see Max today, well, technically yesterday now, in his new place.  It was really kind of sad.  The room is a little less space than I have now.  We couldn't close the door with two wheelchairs and a dog inside.

The move represents another big change for him, not necessarily a positive one, besides the fact that his health will hopefully get a little better with people around who are able to give him the proper care that he needs.  Right now, he sounds like a coffee maker percolating when he breathes.  He has lost a lot of privacy and independence in this move.  And I didn't stay long, because it was obvious that the House family, who has a seven-year-old girl, wanted to go to bed.  I was on the bus back here before 10.  I cried a little on the way home.

And as soon as I got here, of course, the next-door neighbor needed computer help.  Again.  But my new volunteer skills are coming in handy.

That's right, folks.  I am now a productive member of society.  You are reading the words of a trained volunteer at my local Sexual Minorities Youth Resource Center, abbreviated smyrc, pronounced smirk.  My first shift is Wednesday, officially from four to seven, but I'm staying later to help with the writing group.

The drop in center is a place where anyone under the age of 24 who identifies as one of any or all of the rainbow of sexual minorities can come and do just about anything they want in a safe place without any fear or hate.

Anybody 24 and up can train to be an adult volunteer.  The organization is run by the youth and led by them.  The adults are just facilitators of whatever growth and change the youths have happen in their lives.  We just make sure it's safe for everyone, interrupting hateful language, self-destructive behaviors, etc..

I don't think the job will be easy necessarily, but I know will be worthwhile and fulfilling.

That's it for now.  I hope everyone is well.
